M any who are asking how this beef started and whatnot, let me make a long story short for y'all. Common dropped his controversial single "Sweet" which he claimed is not aimed at any particular rapper, although there were many speculations that the song was particularly aimed at Drake. Drake then took time to respond at the Cali Christmas Concert (which Common happened also to performed there, as well) by saying "If you got a problem with me, say it to my face, nigga!" Common replied to countless interviews by basically saying, "Hey, if the shoe fits, wear it." Then Drake dropped his response verse on Rick Ross' "Stay Schemin'". A few days later, Common went all out by adding his own verse, while mentioning Drake's name in the process on the "Stay Schemin'" quote-unquote remix. Which brings us to this point until Drake makes his next move.
1. Common's advantage of the beef is obvious: he's a legend. Drake's advantage of the beef might rely on his popularity and although that doesn't mean jack in hip-hop, many see that as a credible advantage.
2. If there's one thing Drake have that Common surprisingly doesn't is a platinum album. Well, make that two. (Drake's debut Thank Me Later sold platinum in 2010 and his second album Take Care recently sold platinum, as well.)
3. If there's one thing Common have that Drake surprisingly doesn't is a Grammy. Well, make that two. (Common won two Grammys throughout his career: One for Best R&B Song with Erykah Badu's "Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop)," which Common is featured in. And the other for Best Rap Performance by Duo or Group with "Southside," which features Kanye West.)
4. If one question if Common's even capable of beefing (because he's such a peaceful, crochet-hat wearing type of guy who's ironically a pescetarian), then one should hear the deadly Ice Cube dis track known as "The Bitch In Yoo". [NOTE: I tried to upload the classic Pete Rock version we all know and love, but UMG blocked it before I could even send it. But you'll get the point regardless.]
5. I give Drake credit for at least shooting back at Common, even subliminally, because he thought he talked about him. Better to let it out than in, I always say.
6. Now whether the beef is really about Common's love for his ex Serena Williams, and his envy of Drake for the alleged "friendship" that's going on between the two is something I lacked research of. Mainly because I care less about that issue, really.
7. Common did "The Bitch In Yoo". Thought I just put that out there again.
8. By the time Common said "Make no mistake, I'm talking to Drake," I already knew he was talking to him since "Sweet." The listeners wanted true confirmation that Common was indeed talking about Aubrey Drake Graham.
9. Wonder if they'll make up and talk about doing a collbo album when they squash the beef like five-ten years from now..
10. I KNEW someone was going use Drake's "You gon' hype me up and make me catch a body like that" line against him. Although Common isn't a kill-a-man-see-kill-a-man-see-kill-a-man-wit-me-GLOCK type of dude, the Southside Chicago in him felt it was right for him to pull the card -- Hallmark.
11. I bet Drake dreams of this every night (with the other dog as Serena Williams).
12. As I stated, I'm a fan of both Drake and Common. But the majority of people I talked to about the beef either only sided with Drake or sided with Common. One half sides with Drake because he's the hottest rapper and whatnot. And the other half sides with Common because he represents real hip-hop and whatnot. And both sides tell me that I can't stay in-between ("Man, you can't claim you hip-hop if you like Drake!" or "Why you supporting Common? He's nothing but a hater!").
13. Seeing that the beef is inevitably growing, Drake can't flatly ignore it anymore. I think Drake has two choices on his next move regarding the beef: throw some more subliminal pebbles (i.e. "reaching to sell records," "YMCMB is bigger than haters," etc.) or come out with one of the hardest comeback tracks since LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out". I know many people who are spitting out their drinks laughing at that statement I made. But if anything, the challenge from Common may wake up the hip-hop in Drake that we have never seen before, or at least in a long time, that shows him capable of standing on his own in a beef. After all, Common went for Ice Cube's neck a few years after Ice Cube delivered "No Vaseline" to his former N.W.A comrades.
14. If they decide to make another Def Jam
15. I wonder if Weezy would throw any shots on Common or just leave it up to Drizzy to make a line that strikes similarly to Weezy's "How-much-you-love-yo'-lady-money" quote-unquote "alledgedly" to Jay-Z.
16. I really hope this beef doesn't bring a stupid and silly "Young Money vs. Old Money" feud, in which some on the 'net are participating in quite well.
17. Would Common motivate Drake to get DJ Premier, 9th Wonder, or Pete Rock for his next album?
18. Who else can't wait for Affion Crockett's parody of the "Common vs. Drake" beef?
19. Will the beef of Common vs. Drake would somehow put real hip-hop in the attention of the mainstream? Maybe not, huh? Sorry, I really have no faith in the radio.
20. There's also rumors that this beef may be staged. And both Common and Drake are
just reading all of the comments and laughing over bubbly with some Playboy bunnies at the Playboy Mansion. Think that may be true? Well hey, we'll see. April Fool's about three months away, right?
