"Don't be down with anybody, let 'em all be down with you." -- Heavy D
Those who remember copping hip-hop tapes/CDs' in the 90s' would agree with me when I say that Heavy D bridged the gap between your Hammer and N.W.A tapes. Heavy D brought the type of rap you could listen to around your moms, yet the songs itself weren't corny (no disrespect to Hammer, though). Heavy D never had to try to obtain success on the mainstream level, he just did his style of rap that was so fun and lively, he just so happen to get the mainstream's attention. Aside from his contributions as a rapper, he was also an actor way before it was normal for rappers to take up roles. Heavy was also known as a producer, who produced many hits such as Jay-Z's "Guns and Roses" and Beanie Sigel's "Feel It in the Air." Heavy D was also responsible for jump-starting the careers of many producers and rappers, as Pete Rock, Grap Luva, and even Diddy wouldn't be who they are if Heavy D didn't give them a hand.
Heavy D always represents the positive aspect of hip hop, even during the time where it was starting to be cool to be negative. His songs can be played in the clubs, as well as family reunions. Now can many of your favorite artists testify that they can do the same thing? One love to Heavy D and many prayers and condolences goes out to his family, friends, and fans. May you rest in peace, Heavy! May you dance again in heaven with the late Boyz member Trouble T-Roy and I wish you a peaceful journey.
